What Annoying Song Is Stuck In My Head Today?

If I need to suffer with a song stuck in my head, why shouldn't you have to do the same? Sometimes they're good, most times they're bad... but no matter what, they make you suffer. So I like to share the suffering whenever it happens.

I'm pretty sure the Cyrus family deserves credit for being able to produce annoying songs for more than one generation. This may be the most annoying song I've ever posted here (and since I've never posted anything by the Scorpions, I think it would be hard to top this). I'm exceedingly patriotic, but I'm guessing the PA system in hell plays this thing on a continuous loop.

Irrelevant Mystery of the Day

My wife and I were discussing one of her cousins' posting something on Facebook regarding an interaction with the Hansons.  Frankly, I had no idea the band was still around -- I'll be sure to pass that along to one of my good friends, who once noted that it was bands like Hanson that destroyed any chance he had at a musical career.  And I had no idea that meeting the Hansons would be considered newsworthy.  Then again, I once bragged about talking with Chris Matthews on a train, so what do I know?

Anyway, the entire exchange triggered a thought.  In the wake of the sad news regarding Bret Michaels, I immediately made a link between Poison and Hanson, which is admittedly difficult to do.  I started wondering which song using the word "bop" in the title is ultimately more annoying: Poison's "Unskinny Bop" or Hanson's "MMMBop."  My wife correctly pointed out another contender for the honor: Cindy Lauper's "She Bop".

This is a question that I'm not sure I can answer.  We could spend hours debating this, and I'm not even sure I could eliminate any of the contenders.  Anyway, I figured Al Gore's Interweb might provide an authoritative opinion on this, so I thought I'd post the question.  I'm hoping one of my three readers will weigh in.

There is one thing of which I am certain -- all three songs are far better than anything ever produced by the Scorpions.

Others are memorable because of their look, but that's just the beginning of the reasons to remember them.  The latter describes ZZ Top perfectly.  They're the true definition of American originals -- and the music was damn good, too.  You know, unlike the Scorpions.

Once again, I've got a defining song for this category. This is actually a pretty good song, and the fact that it's by George Harrison is another point in its favor. But it definitely gets stuck in your head. However, we'll forgive it because (a) Harrison was a member of the Beatles (b) the video's an underrated 1980's classic, and (c) he gave us a brilliant Simpsons cameo in one of the best Simpsons episodes ever. Besides, as far as we know, he has never collaborated on anything with the Scorpions.

You have to admire Pink Floyd. This cover is simple and to the point. Probably impossible today, because no company exec would agree top something this minimalist, but it was pretty much brilliant for an iconic album.

Although maybe someone will one day try to place Scorpions CDs in blank covers like this. That way, someone might mistakenly buy one.

This is a defining song for this category -- I hate this song, have always hated it, and will hate it for the rest of time (it's somewhere behind Styx' Come Sail Away in my top ten of most annoying songs ever). It's not that it's particularly awful; it's bad, but most of the hatred stems from listening to it far too often in college. Hell, even the Scorpions produced better music than this crap. Hearing ten seconds of it yesterday was awful -- my ears are still recovering.

There's not a lot to say about this album, except it's one of my favorites. The artwork's simple, but I think the music more than makes up for it. Plus, any band that tries to name itself after Mookie Blaylock and then names their debut album after him... well, that makes them cool before you get to the music. And the music, quite simply, rocked.

And I'd normally mock the Scorpions here, but comparing them to Pearl Jam would be like comparing a run-of-the-mill Little Leaguer to a MLB All Star. Actually, let me take that back, because that may be taking it too far. In reality, it would be like comparing a tee-ball player to a MLB Hall of Famer.

Of course, the Scorpions probably stink at tee-ball as well.

I'm pretty sure this song will be a contender for Most Annoying Song of the Decade, if not century (yes, I know the century's a bit young). It's stuck in my head almost immediately after I hear it, it's impossible to get rid of it. Also, the end of the video is more than a little disturbing.

UPDATE: Just to clarify, since faithful reader ST brought it up. I don't think it's a bad song. In fact, it's actually a pretty good song. And while I find Lady Gaga extremely weird, I have to give her props as an artist -- it's pretty clear she's groundbreaking, original, and will be an influence on a generation of artists going forward. Unlike, say, the Scorpions.

I was sitting at lunch yesterday with a colleague who picked up the bottle of hot sauce, which was called "Gringo Bandito Hot Sauce." Looking at the name of the founder of the hot sauce company, he noted that the guy's name was the same as the name of the lead singer of The Offspring. A quick check of the Interweb revealed that they are one and the same.

Now that's pretty cool -- almost as cool as the album cover here. The hot sauce was pretty good. Which means that the Offspring has contributed good music and good hot sauce to the world... unlike the Scorpions, who have contributed neither.

You knew I'd get around to mocking the Scorpions again. But can anyone explain what was the point of this cover? I mean, other than distracting everyone from the crappy music; of course, if that was the goal, they probably should have used this cover on every album.

The Winds of Change Are Here

Loyal reader ST sends us news that may not really count as news...

The Scorpions, the German metal band whose biggest hits include "Rock You Like a Hurricane" and "Wind of Change," will no longer be stinging.

The band, which has been together in one combination or another for more than 40 years, announced Sunday it will be breaking up. They're in no rush to go, however: besides a new album, "Sting in the Tail," due out in March, the band is embarking on a three-year world tour.

"We want to end the Scorpions' extraordinary career on a high note," the band said in a message on its Web site. "We are extremely grateful for the fact that we still have the same passion for music we’ve always had since the beginning. ... We finish our career with an album we consider to be one of the best we have ever recorded and with a tour that will start in our home country Germany and take us to five different continents over the next few years."

The Scorpions' current lineup consists of Rudolf Schenker - who founded the group in 1965 - Klaus Meine, Matthias Jabs, Pawel Maciwoda and James Kottak.

I don't know what's more amazing:

1. That they've been around since 1965;
2. That they're still together; or
3. That anyone cares.

And yes, an annoying song post is coming. I'm just not sure which Scorpions hit will be the subject. I think most of my five readers share the same interest in '80's music, so feel free to add a suggestion in the comments.
